Music Director Position

Music draws the Mayfield faith community together in worship, fellowship, and joy. The Music Director supports the role of music in worship through strong musical ability and enthusiasm. 

Needed:

A Music Director for Mayfield United Church

Mayfield United Church seeks a musician skilled in playing the piano and organ and leading our 15 person strong adult choir.

 

As a member of our Ministry Team, the Music Director will work collaboratively with the minister, staff, lay leaders and volunteers to provide music as an integral part of the worship experience.

 

Mayfield United is a welcoming, inclusive, cheerful church located just off the 410 where city meets country. Mayfield is noted for its supportive atmosphere, its beautifully historic sanctuary with superb acoustics, the congregation’s love of music, as well as its world

renowned potato salad!

This is a part-time position involving approximately 10-12 hours per week with salary based on RCCO salary guidelines and commensurate with experience and qualifications. The start date is September 1, 2025 but, if the applicant would like to begin earlier, that is definitely possible. 

 

Vacation time is flexible as long as the seasons of Christmas (including Advent) and Easter (including Lent and Holy Week) are prioritized.

 

Our sanctuary has a GEM Chorus III organ and a Yamaha B1 upright piano. In addition, there is a keyboard and also another piano in the church hall.

Job Description

Purpose:

To lead and develop the music ministry at Mayfield United Church, working closely with the minister and other team members, in a manner that is consistent with our mission, values, and doctrine.

 

Overview:

Music plays an important part in worship at Mayfield United Church. Music draws the Mayfield faith community together in worship, fellowship, and joy. The Music Director supports the role of music in worship through strong musical ability and enthusiasm. Excellent organizational and communication skills as well as the ability to work as part of a team are essential for this position.  The Music Director will be a key part of a staff team consisting of the Minister, Administrative Assistant, Music Committee, and any others involved in joint programming. 


This position reports to the Minister. This is a part time position with a time commitment of approximately 10- 12 hours a week. 

 

Qualifications:

  • a high level of musical skill including the ability to sight-read music
  • the ability to teach musical concepts and vocal techniques
  • experience with various musical styles
  • strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • excellent leadership skills
  • creativity and the ability to encourage and develop musical talent

 

Responsibilities:

 

Collaborating with the Minister:

  • for a typical worship service, prepare prelude and postlude, select hymns, 1 or 2 music presentations such as anthems or alternate music in conjunction with the Minister and Music Committee,
  • develop and manage a calendar of musical events for the year that will be reviewed quarterly with the Minister.
  • communicate with the Minister for planning as needed.
  • assist with congregational special events and services throughout the year such as baptisms, confirmation, candlelight service, Advent/Christmas, & Holy Week/Easter.

 

Managing Music, the Choir and Other Musical Groups:

  • conduct and organize weekly choir practice and rehearsals
  • become familiarized with the sound system and the use of AV presentations during services.
  • play the piano, organ, and/or keyboard and/or ensure musical accompaniment for each worship service.
  • In the case of a hymn that is unfamiliar to the congregation, with the assistance of the choir, briefly teach the congregation that hymn.
  • prepare anthems to be performed during worship services by choir or special musical guests.
  • plan and organize special musical presentations such as solos, small ensembles, cantatas, and concerts, including supervision of staging including sound system management and production assistance.
  • organize and manage the music library (both physical and virtual). Note that there is currently an extensive music library at Mayfield United Church.

 

Other:

  • coordinate and communicate equipment and staging needs to the Executive.
  • arrange a replacement musician when unable to attend a service with confirmation to the minister within budgeted fee schedule.
  • supervise and schedule the maintenance and tuning of the piano and organ and the use of them by others.
  • prepare an annual music budget for submission to the Finance Ministry
  • teaching privileges in the church can be arranged if desired
  • the opportunity for professional development will be provided with some financial assistance available for workshop or conference costs.

 

The Music Director Program Review:

  • Ministry & Personnel (M & P) shall conduct informal review meetings semi-annually.
